Xavier eventually marries Maria Batista Campo, and they have a daughter who is then named Eva Quinones Batista.

You would think career employees of the U.S. Immigration & Naturalization service would be used to, and understand, this Hispanic heritage naming convention, but boy, lemme tell you, they don't. They look to see what name is at the end, and put that in the form as the Family name. Even though it is actually the name which comes from the person's mother (which came in turn from that mother's father.)

This can often often lead to huge, expensive, lawyer-hiring, years-long efforts to correct processing cluster-*ucks within the world of professional immigration bureucrats, even resulting in completely un-founded commencements of removal (deportation) proceedings. It also often leads to mix-ups for those who eventually receive U.S. Citizenship and their offspring in obtaining Driver Licenses, managing banking accounts, processing paychecks, visiting family in hospitals, etc. etc. etc.

Is it possible that this will now also lead to widespread denial of voting rights to Hispanic families who have lawfully entered the U.S. and obtained citizenship, and their U.S.-born (and born of U.S. citizen) descendents?

Or even those Hispanics descended, not from anyone who crossed the U.S. border, but from folks whose centuries-old homes were crossed by the expanding U.S. borders?
Ben Coxnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586409348584331511.post-66454864187898653532013-08-22T07:27:48.596-04:002013-08-22T07:27:48.596-04:00As I recall, the issue originally arose in connect...As I recall, the issue originally arose in connection with an applicant for annexation and MU zoning for a large parcel bordering on residential properties. He did clearly assert to the judge that I had filed the suit because "[He] doesn't like the policy decision that the Town made." He clearly implied that I am running for mayor or perhaps the town board. If his point was not that the judge should dismiss the case for those reasons, I would like to know what it was. Wright then went on to extol the benefits of the policy decision. He even ridiculed me for believing, in his words: "I don't think the Town should be able to vacate a street and accomplish a public good, because streets are somehow sacrosanct or special or different." I have more to say, which I will post later.David Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17686893760480264946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2586409348584331511.post-6270674994388939652013-07-24T23:02:44.807-04:002013-07-24T23:02:44.807-04:00I deplore intentionally inaccurate statements. I ...I deplore intentionally inaccurate statements. I am Clark Wright; my statements as legal counsel for the Town on March 4 were clear and simple - no name calling. I simply argued to the Court that the courts are not a proper place for policy or political disagreements to be worked out. Such disagreements are more appropriately worked out at the ballot box. How ironic is it that Mr. Cox would use his blog to make further political and policy arguments and then claim that my argument that such is indeed valid discourse in the political arena, but not in a lawsuit, somehow is a "deplorable" personal attack . . . hmm . . .
